Did You Know?

What's The Deal With Bread?

Everything we are hearing now says, "Bread makes you fat."  Not true!  Too many calories from bread, like any other food can contribute to weight gain.  Remember from the past Fit Tip, Calories Count More than Carbohydrates in Our Diets, overall calories is a bigger contributor to weight gain than just carbohydrates.

Although bread in itself is not bad, not all breads are created equal.  So now that we know that bread is not "Bad", how do we choose the healthiest one?

1.  Look for "whole" on the label -- Choose breads made with whole wheat or grains as the first
     ingredient on the label.

2.  Don't be impressed by "wheat" -- Even white bread is made with wheat flour.

3.  "Enriched" isn't always best -- Bread often is enriched because it's been  stripped of many
     nutrients.

4.  "Multi-grain" can be misleading -- Many multi-grain breads are made with the same flour as
     white breads.

5.  Look for breads that contain at least 3 grams of fiber per slice.

The solution isn't to shun bread altogether -- you just have to learn how to pick the right loaf. Although bread has gotten a bad rap in recent years with the popularity of low-carbohydrate diets, the truth is that certain breads are an excellent source of fiber, zinc, iron, folic acids, minerals and B-vitamins. Many people don't get nearly enough fiber, which can help stave off cancer and heart disease.
