Subject: Executive Fitness Weekly Fit Tip: Workout clothing?
Did You Know?

What is the proper type of clothing for exercise?

There is not one specific answer to this question, but, let's look at the different choices.

First of all lets talk about shoes.  Just like a mechanic who needs the right tool a specific job, we need the right shoe for the specific sport we are participating in.  If you are involved in a general fitness program a
cross-trainer should suffice.  Cross-trainers are even okay for running distances up to two miles and some moderate lateral movements like tennis.  If you are playing basketball high tops are strongly recommended to prevent ankle injuries.  And if you are running distances longer than 2 miles running shoes are a must.

Now lets talk about clothing.  The first thing we need to take into consideration is the climate we will be exercising in.  If you are exercising in a moderately hot climate like California, shorts and a t-shirt or tank top are probably your best bet.  Too much clothing and your body will over heat causing your performance to decrease.  If you are exercising a relatively cool climate sweats or tights and a long sleeve shirt maybe necessary.

Now what type of fabrics should we be wearing?  CoolMax, dry-weave, or any other brand of performance fabric is the way to go.  CoolMax and the other brands of performance fabric are made from special fibers which wick sweat away from your body and help you stay cool.  Contrary to popular belief cotton is not a very breathable fabric.  Cotton will hold onto your sweat keeping your body from cooling down most efficiently.

Remember, when we exercise we want to perform to the maximum of our capabilities.  We can only achieve this through proper training, nutrition, and using the right equipment.
