The Sour on Sugar!

Sugar

In the late 1970’s it was decided that the percentage of fat in our diet should decrease from 40%-30%. After 30+ years science has proven this to be a terrible mistake. Fat gives food taste. Take it away, and you need to add sugar. Sugar is made up of two molecules, glucose and fructose. Glucose is natural and able to be metabolized by the entire body. If you don’t eat it your body will make it. Fructose (the bad molecule) is the sweet stuff we crave. Fructose can only be metabolized by the liver (glucose can be metabolized just about anywhere in the body). Fructose is metabolized into fat, which then gets stored in the liver. When you eat an abundance of sugar you are overloading the liver with fat that it can’t export, which causes

  1. Insulin resistance in the liver,

  2. Which drives the pancreas to make extra insulin,

  3. Causing energy deposition in the fat cells (weight gain).

  4. The extra insulin causes

  5. High blood pressure

  6. Heart disease

  7. Cell division which leads to cancer

  8. Changes in the brain that cause dementia

  9. And once your pancreas burns out it will cause type 2 diabetes.

Needless to say you need to take note of how much sugar you are ingesting through ought the day. Sugar in moderation is fine but to put it into perspective one 20 oz. Gatorade can have as much as 30 grams of sugar. Almost every processed food will have added sugars. If it comes out of a box or wrapper chances are that it’s not good for you!

The UN let out a statement saying that non-communicable disease (type 2 diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, cancer, dementia) poses a bigger threat to developing countries around the world then acute infectious diseases (think HIV, Cholera, etc.). If that doesn’t cause some alarm im not sure what will.

If you want to learn more about sugar and its role in the obesity epidemic check out the series on You Tube "The Skinny on Obesity". It's a 7 part series each about 10 minutes long. The link to the first episode is below.

Also check out anything Dr. Lustig, he has tons of videos on the evils of sugar.
