Sit Stand Desks

Thoughts on Sit Stand Desks

The media has been all over the fact that sitting for prolonged periods of time can be bad for you. What about standing? Ask anyone that’s on their feet all day (nurses, waiters, etc) and they will tell you how fun it’s not. When it comes to the switch, keep these things in mind. First, the immediate switch from sitting to standing may not be pleasant. Going from one extreme to the next will may cause some pain. Usually in the form of tight calves, foot pain and possibly swelling of the feet. Second, try to add standing into your day a little bit at a time. This will allow your body to adapt to the new demands, and the transition will be much more pleasant. Third, take note of the shoes you will be wearing while you stand. Men’s shoes aren’t the most comfortable but I can't imagine having to stand in heels all day. Try leaving a comfortable pair of shoes at your desk. Wear your fancy shoes when you need to, and slip into something more comfy on the days when you can.

Ideally you will get a sit-stand desk, which will allow you to do both through out the day. Aim to add an hour of standing a day for the first week and pay attention to how your body reacts. If you feel okay start accumulating more hours each week. Listen to your feet and focus on your posture both while sitting and standing. A sit-stand desk allows you to move! Stand, sit, dance, and move around. Dedicate certain positions to certain tasks. Standing for phone calls, sitting for emails, squats while listening to voicemails. Play with it and find what positions you work best in.

With all this being said, we have had numerous clients that have made the switch with great success. Back and neck pain being the main reason for switching. Those who have switched swear by it. Having the ability to stand AND sit through out the day allows more opportunity for movement, which is what your body craves!
