Why Women SHOULD Lift.

All of the women that come to our studio lift weights. None of the women in our gym are bulky. The myth that lifting makes women big has been disproven over and over again, yet we still have women that come in with their concerns. If only it were that easy to get big muscles…

Testosterone is a steroid hormone that stimulates the development of male secondary sexual characteristics, mainly produced in the testes. Women also produce it, but in the ovaries and adrenal cortex. The average T Level for men 30 years old is 270-1,070ng/dl, where as women 30 years old is 15-70ng/dl. Looking at these numbers you can see women are at an extreme disadvantage of packing on muscle compared to men. It is very difficult to add muscle mass on a body, male or female, especially to the point where they “look bulky”.

SO, no you should not worry about bulking up, yes you lift heavy weights. Here are a few reasons why.

Build stronger bones

Lifting weights can be the best defense against osteoporosis. The stress associated with lifting weights causes your body to make your bones stronger.

Reduce risk of falls

This is especially important if you have osteoporosis, fast twitch muscle fibers assist in speed and power movements. Lifting maintains the ability of the muscles to activate with sufficient force to catch yourself when you lose your balance.

Burn more calories

The more muscle your body has, the more efficient your body will “run”. Your basal metabolic rate is the amount of energy your body needs to keep functioning at rest. For every pound of muscle you add to your body you can burn an extra 50 calories per day at rest.

Get Toned

Toning your arms is actually adding muscle to you arms, and is quite possibly the worst descriptive term for a women’s workout ever in humanity. Ask any woman you know that you think has toned arms and she will tell you she lifts weights. So get toned arms, or preferably strong arms, what ever you want to call it, get them by lifting weights.

In conclusion ladies, please don’t be afraid of lifting weights. It will only help you in every aspect of your health and create a better stronger you. Don’t know where to start? Call or stop by the gym and set up a free assessment.
