The Perfect Smoothie

All too often people tell me what they put in their smoothies and they are usually loaded with fruit. Fruit is not the enemy; it’s what makes them sweet and delicious. BUT, you are missing out on a ton of nutrients by not adding things like protein, vegetables, and some fat. The best part is you can add a lot of these and not alter the flavor. Try to limit yourself to two fruits and add one of each of the ingredients listed below. There's an infinite number of combinations so experiment! As always, try to go organic, local, and seasonal if you can!

1. Ice! 4 cubes is a good start. If you want a thicker consistency you can add a few more.

2.Fruit! Try to use fruits that are in season! Persimmons, mangos, blueberries, strawberries, bananas, or what ever you like the most! (Try to limit your smoothie to one or two fruits)

3.Vegtables! Spinach is usually a safe starting point. It adds very little flavor but will add a ton of nutrients. Experiment with, kale, cucumbers, celery, squash, or even beets!

Pro tip: if you use kale, blend it well with a little water before you add the rest of the ingredients!

4. Protein! Raw high quality free-rage eggs, gelatin powder, or your favorite protein powder. Note that not all protein powders are created equal. Check the label and make sure it’s not filled with a ton of artificial flavors and sugars.

5 Fat! You can source the fat for your smoothie from good old-fashioned nuts (try to use raw) or their butter equivalent(peanuts, almonds, cashews, walnuts). Avocados are also great and add a great creamy texture.

6. Liquid! Possibilities are limitless here. Water always works, as do the various types of milk (Almond, hemp, coconut, whole, and raw milk) Again try to avoid anything with artificial flavors or juices with added sugar!

7. Extras! This is where you can really change the taste of your smoothie. Add cayenne pepper for a kick, ginger for some spice, vanilla extract for some sweetness. Also try turmeric or golden paste, honey, cacao powder, cinnamon, chia or flax seeds. EXPERIMENT, EXPERIMENT, EXPERIMENT!!!!!

If you cover all these ingredients you will have a smoothie that tastes fantastic and that's packed with nutrients. Comment your favorite ingredients below! Be sure to subscribe to our mailing list so you don't miss a post!
